Preparing for Surgery

FAQ's

Q. Why are so many questions asked about my past and present medical conditions?

Because anesthesia and surgery affect your entire system it is important for your anesthesiologist to know as much about you as possible.

You already realize that your anesthesiologist is responsible for your anesthesia to make you comfortable, but in addition, he or she is also responsible for your medical care during the entire course of surgery. Therefore, it is important to know exactly what medical problems you have and any medications you have been taking recently since they may affect your response to the anesthesia. You also should inform your anesthesiologist about your allergies, any hard drug or alcohol usage, and past anesthetic experiences.

Your anesthesiologist must be very familiar with your medical condition so that the best anesthetic and medical care may be provided throughout your operation.

Q. Why do I have to come to the hospital so early?

Patients generally arrive at the hospital one and a half to two hours before surgery. This time allows staff to adequately prepare for your surgery. During the two hours staff will review your medical information. Your nurse will start your IV and complete additional tests and treatments if needed. You will also meet your anesthesiologist. There will also be time for a Reiki treatment if you wish.

Q. What am I allowed to eat or drink before surgery?

Do not eat any food after 12:00 midnight. Do not chew gum.

You may drink water, apple juice or ginger ale up to three (3) hours before your arrival time at the hospital. Do not drink coffee or tea with milk, cream or other dairy product.

For your own safety, it is very important that you follow these instructions carefully about fasting; if not it may be necessary to postpone surgery.

Q. Should I take my usual medications the morning of my surgery?

Take all your usual medications the morning of surgery, except insulin or blood sugar lowering medications, unless directed otherwise.

Q. Who do I contact if I have a question before my surgery?

If you have any questions call the Pre-Admission Services department at
(603) 740-2281 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
